Description

Combe Mill is a sawmill built by 1852 for the Blenheim estate. It features coursed limestone rubble and a gabled concrete tile roof, standing two storeys tall. The front gable has a keyed segmental arch over a 20th-century first-floor door, with a stone lintel above a 20th-century window to the left and a 20th-century door below. To the right, there is a large round chimney next to a bell cupola set in an octagonal pyramidal-roofed stair turret. The rear has a long range of eight windows, with timber lintels over two plank doors, a loft door, and mid to late 19th-century casements on the right side wall. The left side wall features keyed segmental arches over its openings.

Inside, the mill retains its complete machinery, including a rare surviving 1852 A-frame steam engine with a Cornish boiler and a fuel store connected by line shafting to a rear room that contains bellows, a mid-19th-century forge, and a grinding wheel, as well as an upstairs mid-19th-century wood lathe. A dual-drive water wheel is located at the rear, featuring a 1926 breast-fed 'poncelet' water wheel.

Combe Mill is listed at Grade II* for its complete and operational machinery, including the 1852 beam engine and boiler, line shafting and gearing, forge, and lathe, which represent a rare and significant survival in a national context. It is also of architectural interest and holds historical and group value within the Blenheim estate.
