Description

Longnor Sawmill is an early 19th-century sawmill constructed from coursed stone with ashlar quoins and block dressings, topped with a blue tile roof, of which one-third remained at the time of the survey. The building features a two-storey, six-bay front arranged in a 1-2-1-2 pattern, with later gabled two-storey projections to the left and center. The central section has verge parapets and end stacks with moulded capping. The first floor has round-arched window openings with fixed lights and keystones above, while the ground floor has round-arched entrances of various sizes, except for the right-hand bay, which contains an additional round-arched door and a square-headed window. The projecting wings have smaller, irregularly placed rectangular lights.

Inside, there is a cast iron overshot wheel housing and running gear, fed from the rear, along with some later transmission gear and a vaulted mill race return. The mill has had multiple uses, including as a sawmill and a bone crushing mill. At the time of the survey in June 1984, it was undergoing restoration and rebuilding.
