Description

This is a late 16th/early 17th century house located on Grove Street, Wantage. It was originally timber-framed and is shown on Ordnance Survey maps as number 79 Grove Street. The front facade is now of 18th century random bond brick, painted white, with an old tile roof and a 20th century brick stack. The house follows a three-unit plan, with two storeys and a three-window front. A segmental arch frames the middle 20th century front door, and segmental arches and timber lintels feature above the mid-20th century casement windows. The roof is gabled.

A lean-to addition to the rear right is of square timber framing, with a 20th century weatherboarded upper storey. A two-storey, one-bay range extends to the rear left; this was originally timber-framed, but is now of 18th century brick and rendered, with a gabled old tile roof. The interior retains several original features, including chamfered and stopped spine beams with run-out stops, original joists to the front left and right, exposed timber framing throughout, and a three-bay queen-post roof.
