Description

The Borlase Gallery is a house, now used as an art gallery and residence. It incorporates an early 17th-century cross-wing on the left, with a main range dating from the early 18th century, which likely incorporates an earlier structure. The building is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond, with flared brick headers. The first floor of the cross-wing has timber framing with rendered infill. The roof is covered in plain tiles, with a hipped form and a half-hipped gable end to the cross-wing; a brick stack is located to the right of centre. The two-storey, four-window range has a single-storey-and-attic cross-wing incorporated into the left end, projecting approximately half a metre. There are plank doors positioned to the left and right of centre. The windows are casements with leaded lights, arranged irregularly. A flat brick band runs between the ground and first floors of the main range, and the main range has a curved cornice to the eaves. Inside, there is an open fireplace in the ground floor centre room, and much of the original timber framing is visible on the ground floor.
