Description
No. 8 Newbury Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the 17th century and was refronted in the late 18th century. Originally timber-framed, it features Flemish bond brickwork with flared headers and has an old tile roof with a rendered stack. The building has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys tall with a two-window range.
Notable features include carved brackets supporting a pedimented hood above a late 18th-century six-panelled door, which has four glazed panels. To the right of the door, there is a mid-19th-century wood lintel with a beaded surround over a 20th-century casement window. The building also has segmental arches made of alternating red and flared brick above 20th-century three-light casements. The eaves are dentilled, and the roof is gabled with a stack at the gable end on the right.
At the rear right, there is a two-storey, three-window range that follows a similar style and uses similar materials. Inside, the two-unit front range features light timber framing on the left side and rear, along with a chamfered beam. The first floor and attic have not been inspected but are likely to be of interest.
