Description
The Dolphin Public House is a public house located on St. Mary's Street in Wallingford. It dates from the 17th century, with an early 19th-century front. The building features painted brick and roughcast, likely over timber framing on the first floor, and has an old plain-tile roof with a brick end stack on the right side.
The structure is two stories high with a two-window range. The 19th-century shop windows are accompanied by two 20th-century doors leading to a recessed porch at the center. The first floor has two 12-pane horned sash windows with architrave surrounds, rendered plain round arches, facetted keystones, and impost blocks. The roof is topped with a plain parapet, and there are irregular cross-gables at the rear.
Inside, there have been 19th-century alterations to the ground floor rooms. To the right, there is an early 19th-century house that is now part of the public house. This section is rendered, likely over brick, and has an old plain-tile hipped roof. It is three stories high with a two-window range. The ground floor features a sash door on the right, while the left side has three 12-pane horned sashes in a common frame. The first floor has French doors with a reeded surround and a cast-iron balcony at the center, and the second floor contains two 16-pane unhorned sashes. A painted wood cornice adorns the eaves.
