Description

This is a house located at 1 Shirburn Street, dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, with a refronting from the late 18th century. Originally timber-framed, the front is finished in late 18th century Flemish brick featuring flared headers. The house has a gabled tile roof and brick and rendered stacks at the rear. It is designed in an L-plan with a rear left wing and has two storeys with a two-window range. The cellar windows are segmental arched, and there are flat brick arches over double-leaf, four-panelled doors with an overlight, alongside a tripartite sash window to the right. The first floor features segmental arches over six-pane sash windows. The building has flared brick storey bands and dentilled eaves. The rear wing, dating from the 17th century, is two storeys high with a two-bay range, clad in 18th century colourwashed brick and topped with a gabled old tile roof. Inside, there are quartered chamfered and stopped beams, along with a mid-19th century fireplace to the right and a timber-framed rear wall. The first floor includes an ogee-stopped beam to the right and square timber framing with jowled posts at the rear. The roof has not been inspected, but there is a closed truss with clasped purlins and wattle and daub infill at the junction with the rear wing. The building is included for its group value.
