Description
These are two cottages located on Shirburn Street in Watlington, dating from the early to mid 17th century. They were extended in the mid 18th century and remodeled around 1870. Originally, the cottages were timber-framed, but the front is now constructed of mid 19th century Flemish bond red brick. The cottages have a gabled roof covered with old tiles, featuring a brick ridge stack and a mid 19th century internal stack on the left side.
The building has a three-unit plan and stands two storeys high with a three-window range. There are wedged stone lintels above six-panelled doors, eight-pane sash windows to the right, and 20th century casements. At the rear left, there is a mid 18th century two-storey wing made of English bond brick, which also has a gabled old tile roof and a brick end stack.
Inside, the cottages feature ogee-stopped chamfered beams, arch-braced wall plates, tie beams, and a queen-post roof. The left cottage, No. 12, has cased and chamfered beams and early 19th century dog-leg stairs with stick balusters. The first floor has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. These cottages are included for their group value.
