Description

The Town Hall in Watlington was built in 1665 for Thomas Stonor. It features a later 17th century or early 18th century one-bay extension at the rear right. The building is constructed of random bond brick with an old tile roof and a brick stack. Originally designed in a T-plan, it has been modified to an L-plan with a short rear wing to the right of the front. The structure stands two storeys tall with an attic.

The left gable wall has a hood-mould over a toothed round-arch supported by moulded imposts. On the first floor, there is a three-light brick-mullioned window with an ovolo-moulded design and a round-arched central light, while the second floor features a two-light brick-mullioned ovolo-moulded window. The right gable wall is similar, and the rear left gable wall has a clock above a blocked window. The two-storey left side wall is also notable.

All ground-floor entrances are fitted with 20th-century iron gates. The original 1665 building includes a moulded string course and a stepped eaves course. The roof is gabled with a ridge stack and a bell cupola topped with a weathercock on a hipped roof. Although the interior was not inspected, it is known that the first floor was used by the Watlington Free Grammar School, and the partly-open ground floor served as a market.
