Description

This is an early 19th-century house and shop situated on the east side of Couching Street, Watlington. It was originally used as a Chemist's shop from around 1820. The building is constructed of grey brick in a header bond pattern, with red brick dressings, and has a gabled roof tiled in red. A brick stack is located on the left end. The building follows a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high, with a three-window front. A mid-to-late 19th-century shop front features a six-panelled door with an overlight to the left, and 20th-century windows. Gauged brick flat arches feature above the blind windows, and the sashes are horned. A raised red brick band and dentilled eaves add detail. Behind the main building are two mid-19th-century gabled wings constructed from similar materials, although partly rendered, containing mid-19th-century horned sashes. The front room inside has an early 19th-century moulded cornice and a round-headed doorway with panelled reveals and a fanlight above an early 19th century six-panelled door. Similar doors are present elsewhere. There is an early 19th-century dog-leg staircase with a landing. A neo-classical iron grate is found on the second floor.
