Description

Benson War Memorial is located in a small triangle at the junction of Church Road and Oxford Road, prominently situated in the center of the village. Constructed from Cornish granite, it features a wheel-head cross adorned on both sides with interlace patterns carved in relief. The cross head is set atop a plain shaft, which stands on a tapering plinth, resting on a three-stepped square base.

The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on the front and rear of the cross shaft. The front face of the plinth bears the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN THE MEMORY OF THE MEN/ FROM THE PARISH OF BENSON WHO/ LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING/ AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR OF/ 1914 - 1918 THEIR FELLOW PARISHIONERS/ HAVE ERECTED THIS MONUMENT/ “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.” The rear of the plinth includes the inscription "1939-1945," along with the names of those who died in the Second World War listed below. All inscriptions are incised and painted black.

Small plaques attached to the upper step of the base indicate the years when the memorial received the Best Kept War Memorial status in Oxfordshire. These plaques are not of special interest. The area surrounding the memorial is kerbed and includes a flower bed, with a brick path leading from the north-eastern edge of the triangle to the memorial.
