Description
Colerne War Memorial is located on a small grassy area at the edge of the Market Place, near the Walmesley memorial and surrounded by several Grade II listed buildings and the Grade I Church of St John the Baptist.
The memorial is made of Bath stone and features a tapering Latin cross that rises from a moulded collar atop a tall octagonal shaft. This cross shaft is positioned on a large, four-sided, tiered plinth that has corner buttresses, each adorned with a blind trefoil arch. The main faces of the plinth display the dedication and the names of those commemorated. The memorial includes a two-stage sloping base and rests on a square stone slab.
The main inscription reads: "FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN LASTING MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ ERECTED BY/ PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTIONS," with the dates "1939 – 1945" and two names listed below. The plinth also commemorates the First World War combatants, with the names of the later Second World War casualties noted beneath them.
