Description

These are a pair of cottages dating from the 16th or early 17th century. They are built of rubble stone with a timber-framed gable to a cross-wing, and have a stone-tiled roof with an ashlar stack at the west end. The building is approximately three windows wide on its main range, with two windows facing onto the Market Place for number 1, and one for number 3. The central section of the building projects slightly. There are three dormer gables, each with a coped edge and saddlestones, containing ovolo-moulded two-light windows; the central dormer gable appears to be a replacement from 1964. The ground floor has a three-light ovolo-moulded window with a hoodmould above a door set within a chamfered doorcase with a hood supported on scrolled brackets. Number 1 also has a single-light window, and number 3 has a three-light ovolo-moulded window with a hoodmould. A two-light ovolo-moulded window with a hoodmould is visible on each floor of the west end wall. The cross-wing at the east end has a door and a small stone two-light window in the angle of the west side, and a jettied, roughcast south gable end above a stone ground floor, featuring timber casements. Behind number 1 is an 18th-century wing with a two-window, ashlar front. This wing is one and a half storeys high, with two dormer gables on its west front and three-light cyma-moulded mullion windows with hoodmoulds on each floor.
