Description
The Rectory Stables is an 18th-century barn constructed from coursed rubble stone, featuring a stone tiled roof with coped gables and saddlestones. It has ashlar flush quoins and dressings. The building is two storeys high and has three plain square-headed openings on the upper level. The ground floor includes a central broad elliptical arched opening and a round arched doorway to the right, both with boarded doors. To the left, there is a large garage opening from the 20th century. The east end wall displays five pieces of carved stonework that were removed from the parish church during a 19th-century restoration. This includes three gargoyles dating from the 15th century, a respond from a 12th-century arcade, and a piece featuring paired gargoyle heads. The stables are listed for their group value and the medieval carvings that have been inserted. They are illustrated in a drawing of the church by J. Buckler from 1809.
