Description
The Bear and Ragged Staff Public House is a public house dating from the 17th century, with remodels in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with squared quoins and some brick dressings, topped with an old plain-tile roof featuring a brick gable stack. The building has a two-unit plan and is two storeys high. The front has two windows, with a plank door and a brick bay window to the right, and a 3-light casement to the left. The first floor features two similar casements, all adorned with segmental arches and 19th-century bull-nosed brick dressings. There is a small window to the left of the door, which is in a blocked former entrance. The roof has a stack on the right side. To the right, there is a lower 19th-century brick extension that includes an additional entrance and a sash window above a basement entrance. The left end wall and the rear of the main range are roughcast, with narrow casements at the back. A brick extension projects to the rear, covered by a catslide slate roof. Inside, there are stop-chamfered beams, a large central stack with back-to-back open fireplaces, and a flanking stair. The building was formerly designed with a lobby-entry plan.
