Description
Nos 1 to 7 Oriel Square are a row of houses located on the southwest corner of the street, originally listed as Nos 14 and 15 Oriel Street. These buildings date from the 17th to 18th century and are three stories high, constructed with a combination of stuccoed timber framing and brick, and they include cellars.
On the east side, the first and second floors feature a central three-light sash window flanked by a single sash window, all set in moulded wood frames with glazing bars. The sash windows on the first floor have cornices above them. The building has a moulded wood eaves cornice and a parapet. There is a continuous moulded string at the first floor level. In No 14, there is a double sash window and a plain blocked doorframe, while No 15 has a pedimented moulded wood doorframe along with a plain blocked doorway. The south elevation is also stuccoed and contains windows similar to those on the east facade.
The buildings were completely rebuilt around 1950 by Russell Cox but have retained a facade that resembles the original design. Nos 1 to 7 Oriel Square, along with Nos 1 to 10 and No 12 Oriel Street, form a cohesive group.
