Description
No 12 Oriel Street is a house that was rebuilt in the early 18th century, with an early 17th century "passage" type house forming a wing at the back. The front of the house, which may have originally been built as two tenements, features a central stack and is three storeys high. It has a stuccoed timber frame, cellars, and two gables, each adorned with moulded bargeboards and a casement light. The ground floor includes two sash windows and a plain door-frame with a rectangular fanlight. On the first and second floors, there are two 3-light sash windows, all of which have glazing bars.
The back wing, located to the southwest, is two storeys tall and constructed of rubble, featuring three timber-framed gables and an overhang at the first floor on the north side. At the east end of the north elevation, there is a splayed bay with ancient casement windows, and above it, a rectangular bay extends through the first and second floors. Further to the west, there is a blocked two-light stone mullioned window on the first floor. Inside the southwest wing, there is an original stone fireplace.
The property is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 7 Oriel Square and Nos 1 to 10 Oriel Street, contributing to the historical context of the area.
