Description
The walled gardens and pavilion, located approximately 50 meters south of Northbrook Farmhouse, date back to the early 18th century. They feature chequer brickwork and limestone rubble, topped with a Stonesfield-slate roof. The main walled garden measures about 120 meters by 90 meters and is enclosed by brick walls that stand 3 to 4 meters high, divided into panels by shallow piers that rise from a plinth. The rounded brick coping ramps up in certain areas. To the west, there is a smaller garden with lower rubble walls that have a flat stone coping and rounded corners on the west side.
In the east wall of the main garden stands a three-storey brick pavilion tower, which features five-course rusticated quoins. The original openings, which include a doorway flanked by tall windows on the garden side and some blocked openings, are topped with flat gauged arches. There are also small inserted openings on the upper floors. The pavilion is capped with a pyramid roof that has an ornamental weathervane. Inside, there is an early 18th-century balustrade on the first floor, and the top floor showcases a heavy structure of intersecting chamfered beams. The garden front overlooks an elaborate Baroque pond. Historically, Northbrook was the site of a 16th and 17th-century mansion belonging to the Dashwood family, which was destroyed in 1750, but the gardens continued to serve Kirtlington Park.
