Description
The Elephant and Castle Hotel is a house that has been converted into a hotel and public house, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It is constructed of regularly coursed ironstone rubble and features a steeply pitched slate roof with ironstone copings on both sides. The building has ironstone quoins and brick ridge and end stacks on rendered stone bases. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a three-window range arranged in a three-unit plan.
The central entrance features a four-centred arched doorway with a chamfered soffit and jambs, although it now has a 20th-century door. Flanking the doorway are 20th-century windows with chamfered wooden lintels. The first floor has three similar renewed 20th-century windows, also with chamfered wooden lintels. There are two flat-roofed dormers in the roof.
At the rear left, there is a two-storey extension made of ironstone with a slate roof, which includes a plank door with a wooden lintel and 20th-century windows on both the ground and first floors. The large red brick extension attached to the right is noted as not being of special architectural interest. The interior has not been inspected.
