Description

Yarnhill Farmhouse, now a house, dates to 1686, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of squared, coursed ironstone with a steeply pitched stone slate roof laid in diminishing courses, stone coped gables with moulded kneelers, a renewed brick ridge, and end stacks. The building maintains its original three-unit plan. The front has a five-window range. The off-centre entrance is flanked by a 20th-century door and a moulded stone doorhead decorated with rosettes and swags. The ground floor has three three-light stone mullioned windows with opening casements. A continuous string course runs above the windows on the ground floor. The first floor has four two-light stone mullioned windows with casements, also with a continuous string course above. The right end of the front has two blocked windows. The rear elevation features four two-light stone mullioned windows on both the ground and first floors, each with hood moulds and label stops, and an oval window above the entryway. Inside, the farmhouse retains stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, an inglenook fireplace, and a stone fireplace with a four-centred head. A circular stairwell remains from the original staircase. A window on the first floor has a wrought-iron casement fastener with the initials β€œTH” worked in iron, potentially linking to the Thomas Hawten referenced on the front datestone.
