Description

Oriel House is a house dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with some 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of finely jointed squared, coursed ironstone and features a steeply pitched tiled roof. The building has stone ridge and end stacks set on chamfered stone bases and is designed in an L shape, with two storeys plus an attic.

The entrance is off-centre to the left and is now blocked, replaced by an inserted two-light casement window with a stone flat arch. To the left of the entrance is a tall three-light window with a small opening casement that has a wrought-iron casement fastener. To the right, there are two tall three-light windows, also with wrought-iron casement fasteners and stone flat arches. On the first floor, there are three two-light windows that are 20th-century imitations of wood mullioned and transomed designs.

At the rear, the main block features 16-pane sash and casement windows. The rear wing has a wide six-light wood-framed window on the ground floor and tall two-light windows with metal casements and wood lintels on the first floor. Inside, the rear wing has stop-chamfered beams, a wide fireplace with a chamfered bressumer, and a plank door. The 18th-century main block includes windows with partly panelled reveals and window seats, as well as an 18th-century staircase.
