Description

Hill Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed ironstone and features a splay cornice. The roof is tiled, with coped gable parapets and brick ridge and end stacks. The building has a three-unit plan that extends to a U-shape at the rear, and it stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a three-window range. The central entrance features a half-glazed door, and there is an open stone porch from around 1950 with a wooden lintel. Flanking the entrance are single-light windows, while the main windows are three-light casements. All openings are topped with chamfered wood lintels. The roof of the left bay was altered in the 18th or early 19th century to a shallower pitch, and the right return wall was rebuilt in the 18th century. The rear of the house includes a single-storey wing to the left and a two-storey wing to the right, along with a dormer added in the 20th century.

Inside, the room to the right features a former open fireplace with a mid-18th century bressumer that has a dentil cornice, brackets, and a central panel, along with two cupboards that have round-arched panelled doors. To the left of the fireplace, there is a built-in cupboard with double-leaf early to mid-18th century six-panelled doors that have H-hinges, and a chamfered ceiling beam. The hall contains an early to mid-18th century six-panelled door. The kitchen features a stone-chamfered basket-arched doorway and a two-panelled plank door, along with other six-panelled doors. There is a straight flight enclosed staircase.
