Description
The dovecote and attached wall and gatepier at Radway Grange date from the 17th century. The dovecote is constructed from regular coursed ironstone with irregular quoins and features a moulded cornice. It has a stone slate roof with coped gable parapets and kneelers, and is square in plan. The front facing the forecourt has a small two-light casement window with glazing bars. There is a glazed wooden lantern, likely from the 18th century, which has two arched lights with glazing bars on either side and a weathervane. The entrance at the rear has a plank door.
Inside, the dovecote retains nesting holes and has a rafter and purlin roof. The wall to the right is likely part 17th century but mostly 18th century. The ironstone wall features regular coursed sections with coping on the left and return sections, while the right section consists of large ashlar blocks with a stepped corner and shallow coping. The return section includes a gatepier made from part of a 16th or 17th century moulded architrave, used upside down, with sunk shaped panels and jewel work. The top of the moulded stone may be a section of plinth.
