Description

The Church of St. Anne is a Grade II* listed building located in Epwell. It dates back to the 13th century, with alterations and repairs made in the 14th century, specifically in 1425-6, and further work in 1857. The church is constructed from coursed ironstone rubble, with a low pitch slate roof over the nave and a lead roof over the chancel. The structure includes a chancel, nave, south aisle, south-west tower, and porch, featuring a four-window range.

The chancel has a three-light Decorated east window with a trefoiled head, along with single and two-light lancets on the south side and single and two-light Decorated windows on the north side. There is a priest's doorway on the south with a segmental pointed head and a plank door. The nave contains a blocked pointed arched doorway on the north, flanked by two-light Perpendicular windows with square heads. The west end features a three-light window with intersecting tracery.

The south-west tower, which has three stages, serves as the entrance porch and includes a pointed arched doorway with headstops and a plank door. It also has two-light lancets and a sundial, topped with a crenellated parapet. The chancel roof was restored in 1981 by G.F. Lawson, while the nave and south aisle roofs were replaced in the 19th century.

Inside, the church features a decorated two-bay south aisle arcade with two chamfered orders, although the third bay remains at the head of the inner doorway. There is a decorated piscina in the south aisle, a 14th-century octagonal font on a round base, an early 18th-century pulpit, and 19th-century furnishings including a reading desk, benches, and altar rail.
