Description
The Elephant and Castle Public House is a building that likely dates back to the 17th century, with some later alterations. It is constructed from regular coursed ironstone rubble and features a steeply pitched Welsh slate roof, along with three brick stacks located at the ends and along the ridge. The building has ironstone quoins and is designed in an L-shape.
The elevation facing Chapel Street consists of two storeys plus an attic and includes a three-window range. To the right, there is a carriageway with an elliptical stone head. On the left, a doorway, which has likely been remodeled, shows fragmentary remains of a hood mould. Adjacent to this is a three-light stone mullioned window that also has a hood mould and label stops. The rest of the elevation features 20th-century aluminium framed windows with modern lintels, except for two small stone-framed windows located on the gable front to the left.
On the elevation facing Rasebank, there is a canted bay window to the left, with two-light metal casements and wooden lintels, along with additional 20th-century aluminium windows. The attic features a three-light stone mullioned window, painted white, which has a hood mould and label stops. Some wrought iron casement fasteners and springs are present. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
