Description

This is a barn located immediately southwest of Chill Mill, likely built in the 17th century. It features a framed construction with a weatherboarded rear elevation and a peg-tile roof.

The barn is oriented to face east and is positioned at right angles to Chill Mill, forming the western boundary of the garden in front of the house. It has five bays and includes a doorway on the front to the right of center, as well as a central rear doorway with a porch between rear outshuts. There is an outshut at the left (south) end.

The exterior has a gabled roof at the right end and a half-hipped roof at the left end. The front elevation displays tension braces above the middle rail, and some of the timbers in the front frame appear to be reused. There is a pair of full-height plank doors with strap hinges to the right of center. The first floor has three plate glass windows on the left side of the doors and one on the right, all set high up. The rear elevation features a projecting porch with a hipped roof and catslide roofs over the outshuts on both sides, with a catslide roof on the left end outshut.

Interior access was not available at the time of the survey in 1989. An interior inspection may be necessary to confirm the dating and ensure that any historic carpentry is preserved before any planning application.
