Description
This barn, located about 25 meters northwest of Great Forge Farmhouse, is likely from the 17th century. It features a framed construction set on a brick and ragstone rubble plinth, with weatherboarding and a peg-tile roof.
The barn is east-facing and has a rectangular shape, consisting of six unequal bays. The three bays on the left (south) are wider, followed by a threshing bay, and then three narrower bays at the north end. It has opposed threshing doors, a rear outshut, and a front right outshut.
The barn is single-storey with a hipped roof that is gabletted at the left end and half-hipped at the right end. The east front is asymmetrical, featuring a pair of probably 19th-century full-height threshing doors near the center. To the left of the center, there is a small doorway with two small 20th-century windows above, and a similar window on the front outshut. The rear elevation includes a porch with a hipped roof, while the south return has four 20th-century windows.
Inside, the barn has a tie-beam and queen strut roof construction with clasped purlins and curved wind braces. The tie-beams are supported by jowled wall posts with straight braces. The large scantling wall framing includes curved tension braces above the middle rail, with some replacement of studs. The north end bay was originally partitioned off, and the partition in the rear outshut has been removed.
This barn is a good example of a traditional barn in the region, and the 20th-century windows are carefully scaled and positioned. It has group value with Great Forge Farmhouse.
