Description
The Hildenborough War Memorial is located at Foxbush Corner, where Noble Tree Road meets London Road. It is a tall cross made of Clipsham stone. At the top of the cross, there is a low relief carving depicting Christ crucified, with St Mary and St John on either side. The cross shaft rises from a broad, tapering plinth that sits on a two-stepped base.
The front face of the foot of the cross shaft features the phrase "LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS" carved in relief. On the front face of the plinth, the main dedicatory inscription reads: "REMEMBER THE COMRADES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-19 + GRANT THEM, O LORD, ETERNAL REST. LET LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE ON THEM." The names of those commemorated from the First World War are inscribed on the sides of the plinth. The dates 1939-45 are noted on the riser of the upper step of the octagonal base, with the names from the Second World War on the faces to either side.
