Description

Hempnall War Memorial is situated on a small green at the junction of Broaden Lane and The Street, about 40 meters east of The Thatched House, which is also a Grade II-listed building. The memorial features a stone wheel-head cross adorned with intricate carvings of flowers, including the rose, iris, grape, and Passion of Christ, on each arm, with a Tudor rose motif at the center. The wheel of the cross-head has small floral carvings as well.

The cross head is mounted on a straight shaft that has a simply-moulded foot and a carved relief wreath towards the upper part on both the front and rear. The shaft rises from a tapering plinth that has a double-moulded cap and a sloping foot step. This is set on a large stone base with a rusticated surface.

The main dedicatory inscription, which appears on the front and rear faces of the cross shaft beneath the carved wreaths, reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD 1914-1918," with the names of those commemorated listed on two faces of the plinth. The dedication for the Second World War, located on the east face of the plinth, reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD 1939-1945 (NAMES)."

The memorial is enclosed by a small gravelled area, which is bordered by four low posts that support spiked chains. The south-eastern post is inscribed with "COMMEMORATION OF THE KING’S SILVER JUBILEE 1935."
