Description

No 180 on Tonbridge Road is a small house, likely built in the 1840s, which appears to have been rebuilt or remodeled at the right end. There is a 20th-century addition at this end. The house is constructed of Flemish bond brick and has a slate roof with a brick chimney.

The house is arranged at right angles to No 182, overlooking but set back from Riding Lane. The front block is two rooms wide with a central entrance, and there may be a service wing or outshot at the rear, although this was not inspected during the survey in 1988. A straight joint in the brickwork to the right of the front door suggests that there has been rebuilding or extension.

The exterior features two storeys and a hipped roof, with a symmetrical three-bay front. The central entrance has a 19th-century panelled front door with a gabled porch hood supported by shaped brackets, and a moulded 19th-century doorcase. The house has 19th-century twelve-pane sash windows with rubbed brick flat arches. The ground floor window to the right has a square-headed hoodmould with label stops, all crafted in moulded brick.

The interior was not inspected but may still have original joinery. This house forms a pair with No 182.
