Description

No. 38 Dean Street is a house from the early 19th century, constructed of painted Flemish bond brick with a slate roof and an end stack featuring a brick shaft. The building has a double depth plan and includes a single-storey rear lean-to. It stands two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front, and the roof runs parallel to the road, adorned with a moulded eaves board.

The front door, which is recessed and panelled, dates from the late 19th century and is located to the left, accompanied by a narrow timber two-pane sash window from the 20th century. To the right on the ground floor is a 16-pane early 19th-century hornless sash window, positioned below a long timber lintel or old fascia. This, along with a straight joint in the brickwork to the left of the window, indicates that there may have been a former shop front. The first floor features two matching 16-pane sashes.

The interior has not been inspected. No. 38 is included for its group value, contributing to the attractive mixed streetscape of Dean Street, which features a late 16th-century townhouse and is noted as the most complete street in Crediton that survived the fire of 1743.
