Description
Dean Thatch is a house located on Dean Street in Crediton, likely dating from the early 18th century or earlier. The building is roughcast, probably made of cob, and features a thatched roof with a plain ridge and a gable at the right end. It has end stacks with brick shafts. The house has a single-depth plan that is two rooms wide, with a central entrance.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical north front that is five windows wide, although one window is blocked. There is a half-glazed front door, likely from the early 20th century, located approximately in the center. To the left of the door, there is one ground floor window, and to the right, there are two ground floor windows, all of which are 2-light timber casements with glazing bars from the 20th century. The first floor also features similar casements of different sizes, with a blocked window to the left of the front door. The right side of the house, which faces the street, has one first floor 2-light casement window, probably from the 19th century, with six panes per light.
Inside, the house is plain, with a roof supported by A-frame trusses that are pegged at the apex of the principal rafters. The collars at the attic floor level appear to be replacements with metal fixings. Dean Thatch is one of the few thatched houses remaining in Crediton and contributes significantly to the historic streetscape of Dean Street, which contains some of the earliest buildings in the town.
