Description
Three adjoining houses, probably dating to the early 18th century or earlier, with alterations in the mid to late 19th century. The walls are of roughcast cob, and the roof is slate with deep eaves projecting from moulded brackets. Brick chimney shafts are present, with one at the rear of No. 31, and a stack heating a rear right corner fireplace in No. 32. The layout is an overall "L" shape, with the main range single depth and three rooms wide, containing a passageway between Nos. 31 and 32. No. 30 has a rear wing set at right angles.
The front has a 1:1:2 window arrangement. No. 30 has a 20th-century door to the right, an early 19th-century 16-pane sash window to the left, and a late 19th-century 2-light casement with round-headed lights and glazing bars on the first floor. No. 31 has a half-glazed door to the left and a 4-pane sash window to the right, with a 20th-century timber casement on the first floor. No. 32 has a boarded door to the passage on the left, a 20th-century glazed front door to the right, an early 19th-century long 2-light casement with 10 panes per light and old glass to the right, and two matching first-floor casements to those of No. 30. The interior of No. 32 is plain; the interiors of the other properties have not been inspected. These are modest, small vernacular houses in a street that avoided 18th-century fires, and potentially contain some of the earliest buildings in Crediton.
