Description

This is a mid-19th century shop with accommodation above, now used as a restaurant, incorporating earlier fabric to the rear, and featuring a late-19th century shop front. It is located prominently near the church. The building is constructed of local volcanic trap rubble and brick; the front elevation is stuccoed and blocked out, and the roof is slate, with a hipped left end and a stack with a brick shaft. The original plan comprised two rooms with a central entry. The asymmetrical front has two windows. The late-19th century shop front on the left has pilasters with faceted panels and an entablature. A 4-panel door is located to the right, above which is an overlight with geometric glazing bars. To the left of the door is a 3-light high transomed shop window, the narrower light flanked by pilasters and possibly converted from a doorway. A late-19th century 2-pane sash with margin panes is on the ground floor to the right. Two circa mid-19th century 16-pane sashes are visible on the first floor. An old cast iron street sign for Bowden Hill is attached to the front. The Dean Street elevation, which has lost its plaster except for a section of the first floor on the left, reveals stone rubble on the left, separated by a straight joint from brickwork on the right. The brickwork shows stretcher bond at ground floor level and Flemish bond above, with a large trimmer beam at first floor level and smaller timber lacing below. There is one circa mid-19th century 12-pane sash to the left on both ground and first floors; the ground floor window has a timber lintel, and a blind window is above it, also with a timber lintel. The interior was not inspected, but is known to contain features of interest including joinery. The building is included for its group value.
