Description
The Buller memorial is located in the southeast corner of the churchyard in Crediton and was erected in 1911 to honor General Redvers Buller of Downes. It is made of granite ashlar set on a base of local volcanic stone rubble. The memorial is enclosed by granite balustraded walls on the south and east sides, with solid corner sections, all featuring moulded granite coping. There is a flight of steps with a matching balustrade on the north side. At the center stands a plain tapering cross on a chamfered octagonal plinth, which rests on a two-tier octagonal base. An inscription on the east side reads, "To the Glory of God, June 22, 1911."
Redvers Buller was considered the squire of Crediton and a hero of the West Country during his lifetime. This memorial, which has a more austere design, contrasts with the elaborate Caröe memorial dedicated to him located over the tower arch inside the church. The Buller memorial is included for its historical significance and its group value with other nearby structures.
