Description

The gate piers, gates, and fencing at the entrance to Mountains are probably from 1865, built alongside the house and likely designed by G. Somers Clarke for the Johnson family. They are an example of High Victorian Gothic style. The gate piers are square at the base and octagonal above, with the upper sections battered and finished with a brattished cornice. Each pier is topped with a Gothic style iron lamp bracket featuring ornamental detail. The iron gates have curved diagonal braces, spike finials, a solid middle rail with pierced ornament, and standards decorated with wrought iron foliage. There are also two curved sections of fencing to the left and right. This is a well-preserved example of a High Victorian gateway.
