Description
This is a barn located approximately 40 meters south of Brook Farmhouse, dating from the 17th century with some remodeling in the 19th century. The structure is timber-framed and clad with weatherboards, topped by a corrugated iron roof, which was originally either peg-tile or thatch.
The barn is designed as a threshing barn oriented on a north-west to south-east axis, facing the farmyard to the north-east. It originally featured large double doorways on opposite sides leading to the threshing floor, but the front doorway is now obscured by a secondary lean-to outshot. The lean-to on the left end may not be original but is likely an early addition, while the various sheds and lean-tos at the front are from the late 19th and 20th centuries.
Most of the front wall is concealed by a mix of secondary additions, but the extreme right end is visible, featuring a small doorway with a 19th-century plank door. Above this doorway, there is a 19th-century pivoting casement window with glazing bars. The main barn has half-hipped ends, with the left end extending as a hip over the outshot. The rear double doorway is not full height and is blocked, now containing a 20th-century window.
Inside, the barn is open to the roof and consists of four bays. The frame uses large scantling timbers, with some bays featuring large curving tension braces, while most have been replaced with narrower straight braces. The wall posts have formed jowls, and the tie-beams are supported by straight arch braces. The roof is constructed with clasped side purlins and queen struts.
