Description

The house, likely dating from the late 16th or early 17th century, and possibly with an earlier core, was altered in the early 20th century and has later rear additions. It is a framed timber building with a peg-tile roof and brick stacks. The house is set back from the road and faces south. Originally, it had a 3-room lobby entrance arrangement; the two right-hand rooms were heated by back-to-back fireplaces in an axial stack, with a hall in the centre and a parlour or kitchen to the right. The left-hand room was initially an unheated service room, likely divided into two sections, with a later stack added at the left end. A narrow bay associated with the stack suggests the house may have been floored from the outset, though it could relate to a former passage and potentially indicate medieval origins. The axial stack has staggered triple shafts with a corbelled brick cornice. The front facade has fairly closely-spaced studs with downward-curving tension braces above the middle rail in the outer bays and is symmetrical with four bays, featuring six windows on the first floor. A pentice runs along the front at first floor level, with a peg-tile roof on brackets, interrupted by a probably early 20th-century gabled framed porch re-using old timbers. A circa 1920s plank front door is present. The windows are 1-, 2- and 4-light casements with plate glass and high transoms on the ground floor. The rear elevation was not inspected. The interior and roof remain uninspected but are likely to be of interest; an internal inspection is recommended to further refine the dating and ensure that any medieval or later features are protected before any planning applications are considered.
