Description
Old Standen is a Grade II* listed house located on Standen Street in Benenden. It dates back to the late 15th century and features an open hall-house design with a crosswing on the right side. The house has a late 16th-century chimney and an 18th-century extension and refronting on the left side, which includes a 20th-century gable and fenestration.
The building is primarily timber-framed, with only the brackets visible on the front elevation. The rear showcases exposed close-studding and a jettied overhang on the crosswing. The ground floor at the front is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, while the first floor is plastered. The crosswing on the right has a brick-faced ground floor and is weatherboarded above, while the left side features painted brick on the ground floor and tile hanging above. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with old tiles, topped with a brick chimneystack. The house has two storeys and attics, with four windows featuring 20th-century casements, a 20th-century dormer with a gabled projection, and a 20th-century gabled porch.
Inside, notable features include a roll-moulded and crenellated dais beam, open fireplaces with wooden bressumers, and two three-centred arched doorways in the crosswing adorned with floriate carved spandrels. The first floor has jowled posts and elaborate crown posts, with unique rose carvings on four head braces and an octagonal crown post in the crosswing. Additionally, the rear wing contains an early 17th-century bressumer.
