Description
Number 1, Middle House and Mercer's Cottage is a cottage row dating from the 17th century, with cladding from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is timber framed, featuring a ground floor made of red brick on both the left and right sides, with weatherboarding in the center. The first floor is adorned with fish-scale tile hanging. It has a plain tiled roof that is half hipped at both ends, with a step up to the right of the center. There are tall ridge stacks on the left and at the center, along with a small stack off the ridge at the rear right. A gabled dormer is located to the right of the ridge step. The cottage has two storeys with an irregular arrangement of windows, comprising nine on the first floor and ten on the ground floor. There are two entrances to the right, with one entrance located in a shallow single-storey extension to the right of center and a deeper extension to the left. The left side features a 20th-century weather porch. All doors are boarded, and there are large catslides at the rear with extensions.
