Description

The Old Barracks is a building that was originally a cloth hall, now serving as a house. It dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th century and late 19th century. The structure is timber-framed, featuring weatherboard cladding on the ground floor and tile-hung walls on the first floor, which are swept out in a bellcast shape over a cornice. The roof is plain tiled and hipped, with a central hipped dormer. There are projecting stacks at both ends, with one on the right and another on the left, as well as a main stack located to the rear, slightly left of center. The building has two storeys and attics, with a slightly irregular front that has four windows. The windows are very large late 19th century metal-framed lattice casements.

To the right of the center, there is a doorway with a wide half-glazed Tudor arched moulded door surround, topped by an 18th-century flat hood supported by brackets. There is also a doorway with a flat hood at the right end of the building. At the rear, there are 19th-century extensions, including a hipped wing to the left and a range of four gables to the right.

Inside, the building features a four-bay frame with a two-bay crosswing addition. The ground floor has heavily jowled wall posts with curved braces, and there are roll-moulded ceiling beams. The dining room includes plank and muntin panelling.
