Description

Forge Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It has a framed construction that is clad with weatherboarding and features a peg-tile roof with a brick chimney stack. The main block of the house is two rooms wide, with a large heated room on the left (south) side where it connects to the Old Forge. There are service rooms in a rear outshut, which includes a central stair projection at the back. The partition between the two ground floor rooms has been removed. Forge Cottage is attached to the White House and shares a continuous roof with it, although internal evidence suggests that the White House was built later.

The exterior of the cottage is two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical three-bay front with a deep mansard roof. The central entrance features a 19th-century panelled front door set within a shallow porch that has a moulded cornice. There are three-light casement windows from the late 17th century, with two on each floor, showcasing square leaded panes and some fine blacksmith-made window furniture with spring catches and iron scrolls. The attic includes three flat-roofed dormers with small-pane casements. Inside, some of the framing is exposed, showing slender scantling. The first floor and roof space have not been inspected, but it is noted that the roof retains a former hip at the north end. The weatherboarding on the north end wall, which adjoins the White House, was previously external.
