Description
The Forge is a small house that has been converted from a forge, likely dating from the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The ground floor is constructed of brick, while the first floor is weatherboarded, topped with a peg-tile roof and featuring a brick stack.
The house faces north and is situated next to Forge Cottage on the right (west) side. It consists of a small two-cell main block, with an outshut on the left (east) end and another outshut at the rear. The stack that served the original forge may be located at the junction with Forge Cottage.
The building is two storeys high, with a gabled roof at the left end, which is tile-hung. The front has an asymmetrical arrangement of windows, with one window located in the left end outshut. To the left of the main block is a 20th-century timber stable door. The windows are timber casements with glazing bars, likely from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Although modest in appearance, The Forge holds an important position on Matfield Green. The interior has not been inspected but may have features of interest.
