Description

Kilndown Old School is a former school building from the mid-19th century, constructed of dressed sandstone and topped with a plain tiled roof. It features a master's house with a cross-wing and a school range at the rear, designed in the Tudor-Gothic style.

The building is one storey with an attic, showcasing an entrance front that includes kneelered parapet gables, three gabled dormers, and a projecting two-storey wing on the left. This wing has an offset stack with lozenge-set flues and a label-hooded two-light traceried window on each floor. The main range has a similar gabled porch with arcaded sides and stone benches on the sides. The right side of the building has a staggered three-light gable window and an arched two-light window on the ground floor, which features a quatrefoil above and a hood-mould, along with a quatrefoil and lozenge-moulded surround that includes a Latin motto.

The school range is also one storey with an attic, featuring two gabled dormers and projecting two-storey gables on both the left and right sides. It has mullioned windows with label heads and an additional bay on the right end that includes an arched doorway. The building is attributed to Alexander Roos from 1846, although records indicate the school was established in 1869 and attributed to Mr. Norris, who was the Carpenter and Slater's Clerk of Works at Kilndown Church. The school was dedicated in 1869, as noted in the parish magazine and the Goudhurst Coronation Book by W. Tiffin.
