Description

House. Dating back to the 16th century, with extensions added between the 18th and 20th centuries. The house is timber-framed with exposed close-studding and plaster infill, with later additions in red brick and tile hanging. It has a plain tiled roof. The original core is a four-bay continuous-jettied house, built on a brick plinth with a jetty supported by brackets, returning to the right and featuring a moulded bressummer. The roof is half-hipped, with a stack to the left and a projecting gable at the right end. The upper floor has four wooden casement windows, while the ground floor has two, with a blocked mullioned window in the centre. A plank and muntin studded door is located on the right-hand side. A projecting wing, dating from the 18th to 20th centuries, is located to the left, with a half-hipped roof and a hipped projection to the right. The fenestration is irregular, with wooden casements, and a boarded door is situated in the re-entrant angle. The return and rear (garden) elevations are partially painted and rendered. The house is believed to be named after a member of the locally significant Twysden family, rather than being associated with their original estate.
