Description

Goudhurst Butchers is a house and shop located on The Plain in Goudhurst. It dates from the 17th century or earlier, with a front that was altered in the early 19th century and further modified in the mid-20th century. The building features red and blue chequered brick on the ground floor, tile hanging on the first floor, and a slate roof. It is two storeys high, set on a dressed sandstone plinth, with a hipped roof and stacks on the right and rear right.

On the first floor, there are three glazing bar sash windows, and on the ground floor, there are two sash windows along with a panelled door located to the centre right, which is accessed by five steps and topped with a moulded cornice hood. To the left, there is a projecting mid-20th century shop front that is single storey with a flat roof, featuring a tiled frontage, plate glass windows, and a tiled interior that includes a glazed cash desk.

At the rear, there is a courtyard enclosed by a brick wall that projects from the house, standing about seven feet high and sloping down to double boarded gates, alongside an attached outhouse. The rear wing is half-hipped and tile hung, dating from the 17th century or earlier.
