Description

TQ 64 SE PADDOCK WOOD MAIDSTONE ROAD

6/333 Barn, cartshed and walls about 40m north west of Putlands Farmhouse II

Barn, cartshed and brick walls to yard. Probably mid C19. Barn weatherboarded on brick footings; slate roof. Cartshed brick with a slate roof. Brick walls to yard.

Plan: The barn faces west into a small yard that fronts the road, cartshed at right angles to the north, the yard completed by a brick wall parallel to the road. The barn has a rear shippen outshut facing into a large yard to the east and front left and right outshuts flanking the central porch. 2-bay cartshed.

Exterior: The barn has a half-hipped roof. Probably 3-bays, the central porch with a hipped roof and C19 plank doors with strap hinges. Paired loft doors in the left (north) return. The roof is carried down as a catslide on posts to the open-fronted rear shippen. The cartshed has a hipped roof and central post dividing the bays. The brick wall to the west ramps up to the west wall of the cartshed and the south end of the barn.

This small-scale planned yard forms an attractive group with the farmhouse (q.v.) set back to the south and the oasthouse (q.v.) beyond the garden to the south.
