Description
Toll Gate Cottage is an early 19th-century turnpike toll cottage located on the south side of Rastings Road in Lamberhurst. The building features ornamental tile hanging on the first floor above a sandstone ashlar ground floor, topped with a slate roof. It has a two-storey central block that is canted, flanked by single-storey hipped wings, all adorned with lozenge pattern tile decoration on the first floor. A central moulded chimney stack is present. The first floor has a glazing bar sash window, while the ground floor includes four glazing bar sash windows and a central boarded door set within a gabled wooden porch that is arcaded and sits on a sandstone base. At the rear right, there is a weather boarded timber framed single-storey extension. Although the Kippings Cross to Fliowell Turnpike was established in 1762, this cottage was built later.
