Description

Tollgate Cottage is a turnpike cottage built in 1769, with an early 19th-century addition at the north end. It features coursed sandstone, sandstone dressings, sandstone rubble, and brick, topped with a blue/black plain-tile roof that has parapet gable ends. The building is designed in the Strawberry Hill Gothic style.

The front has a shaped gable with coping that is decorated with running foliate ornament and topped with a crocketed finial. The cottage has a square, single cell plan and a band between the two storeys. An oculus with a quatrefoil is located in the shaped gable at the first floor. The doorway, which is now blocked, is in an ogee arch and is flanked by two single lights with cinquefoil heads set in two-centred arches. The south side wall has similar coupled and single-light windows. The rear wall features a stack that is now internal.

The addition to the north end is marked by a straight joint in the stonework and is made of sandstone and brick, standing two storeys tall. One ground floor window has three lights with intersecting glazing bars set in a four-centred arch. Inside, both the ground and first floors have brick-lined groin vaulting, and a brick at the first floor bears scratched initials and a date. The road was turnpiked in 1762.
