Description
Turnpike Cottage is a detached cottage that dates from the mid-17th century, with an addition from the 18th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a stone slate roof with coped verges and gable end stone stacks that have moulded cappings. The cottage is single-storey with an attic and has two windows.
On the front, there is a square stone porch with a planked door to the left. To the left of the porch, there is one 2-light cyma-mullioned casement window, and to the right, there are two more. The right-hand bay is an addition that connects to the main structure at a straight joint. The attic includes a full gabled dormer with a 2-light recessed cyma-mullioned casement window on the left, and a hipped half-dormer on the right that also has a mullioned casement window. At the rear, there is a lean-to extension with 20th-century casement windows.
Inside, it is reported that there is a beaded fireplace surround in the added bay. Historically, this cottage was the site of a toll gate on the Bath Road, which was established in the early 18th century, making it the earliest turnpike in Wiltshire.
